We Have a Winner!

ReviewAug08Congratulations to the winner of the August 2008 THSC REVIEW "Who Said This?" contest! Shalonda Trevino of Kyle correctly guessed that Winston Churchill said, "Schools have not necessarily much to do with education... they are mainly institutions of control, where basic habits must be inculcated in the young. Education is quite different and has little place in school."

She selected the book When Homeschooling Gets Tough! by Diana Johnson as her prize.

We appreciate the readers of the THSC REVIEW who sent their guesses and hope that the REVIEW is a blessing. Be watching for the next quotation question - you could be the next winner!

Ft. Worth Home Schooler Inspired by Educator/Activist

Read All About ItCameron Smith, a sixteen-year-old home schooler from Ft. Worth, was inspired by the story of a local educator who hosted Martin Luther King, Jr., in a 1959 visit to the city. Vada Phillips Felder, who died recently at age 97, met King at a Baptist Convention and invited him to Ft. Worth. He stayed in her mother's spare bedroom, as local hotels did not allow African-Americans. Smith was moved by a newspaper story about Mrs. Felder and wrote an essay which won first place in the 13th Annual Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition. His essay was titled "One Night with the King." He was awarded a $2500 scholarship and a gold trophy.

Veterans Remember When "Little Boy" Fell 63 Years Ago - a History Lesson

veteran"At 8:15 a.m. August 6, 1945, the United States became the first nation on earth to use an atomic weapon in war.

" 'Little Boy', the single bomb dropped on Hiroshima, ended the lives of more than 140,000 men, women and children. Three days later, the U.S. dropped another atomic bomb, 'Fat Man', on Nagasaki killing another 80,000. On August 15, the Empire of Japan surrendered and Americans were spared from the specter of a bloody invasion of the mainland.

"Old soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines remember how they felt when the bombs were dropped, as well as what they think now. Voices of Veterans, an oral history program run by the Texas Veterans Land Board, asks each veteran interviewed to share their personal story about this pivotal time in U.S. history. Their stories are posted on a website for all to hear, www.voicesofveterans.com."

An old English proverb states, "A friend in need is a friend indeed." I looked around at the sea of faces that filled my home-men, hot and sweaty, with faces and hands covered in dust from a hard day's labor. Most had brought their own post drivers, gloves, and fencing pliers, and all had brought a willingness to work. Seventeen men and their families had come to erect a wire fence around my half-acre patch. My husband had purchased the materials earlier, and we had hoped to move our animals onto our own land soon. Now that he was gone, I desperately needed to move our animals, but building the fence seemed an impossible task for my children and me.
Just two weeks before, these same families had brought an abundance of food, compassion, and support. Many of them had driven more than forty-five miles one way three days in a row to offer support and assistance after the death of my husband. They also provided and served one of the meals on the day of the funeral, a task usually reserved for the church.
