THSClogo

THSC is once again offering its free Continuing Legal Education seminar, Defending the Family Against CPS, this time on September 7 in San Antonio.

If you are an attorney and are interested in attending, be sure to register by August 31 to guarantee a seat at this important and informative event.

Responding to the urgent need for the legal defense and advocacy of families against false Child Protective Services (CPS) allegations, Texas Home School Coalition has launched an effort to build a network of attorneys who are willing to help.  THSC is therefore offering FREE registration in exchange for an agreement to handle one pro bono CPS case referred by THSC.

Speakers will be THSC President Tim Lambert, attorneys Chris Branson and Paul Stuckle. Attendees will receive 4.0 MCLE hours.

Feel free to pass along this invitation to any family-friendly attorney that you may know.  For additional information, click on the graphic.

How One Mom Made a Difference

texascapitolTHSC received the following letter from a home schooling mother. If you have ever wondered whether or not one person can make a difference, this letter will assure you that each of us has a role to play in our government.
I am the mom of a severely brain injured little boy who is homeschooled.  He receives private duty nursing services in our home.  He had been receiving the same number of nursing hours for a number of years until one day, Medicaid decided that they were going to cut his nursing care and eventually remove it.  I filed an appeal (with the help of Advocacy, Inc) which is also called a "fair hearing" - and we won.  We won for only 3 weeks when they cut his hours again.  The attorney from the State of Texas said that they "could do anything that they wanted every 60 days".  The nursing agency has to request authorization every 60 days in order to continue his nursing care.

We filed a federal lawsuit and we won.  It fixed the problem for my son but not for all the other Medicaid recipients in the State of Texas.  Representative Jim McReynolds wrote HB2256 which he kindly referred to as "The Jonathan Bill," named after my son.  Senator Bob Deuell joined in support and the bill recently passed both the House and Senate.  It was signed into law by Governor Rick Perry.

My son will be going to Austin next Thursday (08/16) to have an opportunity to have his picture taken with Governor Perry.  It will also give me an opportunity to thank all those who worked so hard on this bill.  It will make some legislative changes to Medicaid which will protect others from the struggles that my son faced.

My son is unable to walk or talk, but I am so proud that through his struggles, he has changed the law and will help countless others.

One of the first things a home schooling mother realizes is that she has all her previous duties to fulfill in addition to teaching her children. After much frustration, irritation, and aggravation, I worked out some principles and tactics that allow me to be a wife to my husband, a teacher to my children, an administrator to run our home, and even a participant in outside activities.
