Back to School!
As many Texas public schools are back in session this week, so also are many home schools. The phones at the Texas Home School Coalition have been very busy! Schools are starting, and the "ministry letters" to school districts have already started to flow. Be sure to watch in upcoming THSC E-Newsletters for the latest additions! If you are one of those families starting this year, be sure to check out the THSC Web site. You will find much helpful and encouraging information.

Be a Card-Carrying Home Schooler!
One of the many benefits of membership in the Texas Home School Coalition Association is the receipt of FREE teacher and student ID cards. Home schoolers around the state have used these laminated, professional-quality cards for obtaining teacher and student discounts at hobby stores, bookstores, office supply stores, museums, and on bus passes. Each parent/teacher and student in the member family receives an ID card.

Labor Day - September 1
Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. Originating in 1892, it was declared a federal holiday by Congress in 1894. Originally meant to create a day off for the working man by the Central Labor Union in New York, it has evolved into the symbolic end of summer and an opportunity for businesses to hold big sales. Wonder who's working the cash registers?

Home Schooling Showdown in Brazil
MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL, August 18, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - "Two homeschooled children face a battery of tests this week in a showdown between the Brazilian government and a Christian family over the educational rights of parents in the South American nation.
"The children of Cleber and Bernadeth Nunes have already passed the entrance exams for law school at the ages of 13 and 14, but that doesn't satisfy the Brazilian government, which has been trying to force them into its troubled school system since 2006.
"After over a year of battling authorities for the right to home school their children, the Nunes' two prodigies will be tested on a variety of subjects to prove that their parents are not guilty of 'intellectual abandonment,' a legal term that indicates that one has not fulfilled the obligation of providing for the education of one's children."

San Antonio Social Security Official Denies Benefits to Home Schooler
An official with the Social Security (SS) office in San Antonio denied benefits to a home schooler after the mother filled out the required form. A call to the SS office confirmed that the mother had done all that was required, but the benefits were then denied because she needed to provide "evidence" that she was meeting state requirements for home schooling. When she asked what documentation she needed to provide, the staff responded that it did not know. After leaving two messages and receiving no return calls, the mother contacted THSC. Tim Lambert wrote to the office and pointed out the guidelines from their own policies pertaining to students receiving social security benefits. Read the letter.... | |

In My Opinion Deep Roots Make Way for Strong Wings
"What about socialization?"
"You can't shelter them forever!" "How will they live in the 'real' world?"
These are the daunting voices that, like clockwork, invariably speak up at the start of each new home school year. It is like the rat-a-tat-tat of a loaded weapon that is being fired squarely on your convictions. Each year without fail, just as the history books tell of a fearless General Jackson, there you stand like a "stone wall"!
I recently encountered a well-meaning friend who challenged our family's convictions concerning youth groups and the age we felt it would be appropriate, if at all, for our children to attend the youth group.
