Serving Texas Home Schoolers for Over 20 Years September 9, 2008
A Time to Remember

9_11When terrorists hit the World Trade Center in 2001, America mourned its loss but resolved never to forget.
A few months later, Congress passed a joint resolution that named every September 11th as Patriot Day. As the anniversary approaches again this year, take time to remember appropriately the more than 3,000 people who lost their lives that day.

Brazilian Home Schoolers Score Surprise Victory in Showdown Against Government

Big News
"In a surprise victory against government officials who sought to prosecute a homeschooling family for refusing to participate in the public school system, David and Jonatas Nunes have passed tests proving a high level of knowledge in a variety of subjects, including history, the natural sciences, the arts, sports, computing, and mathematics.

"The tests given to the Nunes children were so difficult that public school teachers admitted that they could not pass them. The two boys, aged 14 and 15, had only one week to study for several of the tests, which were announced only a week in advance.

"The exams were ordered by a local court in an attempt to determine if the Nunes had committed the crime of 'intellectual abandonment', which could have resulted in a heavy fine, and possibly jail time for the two parents, as well as loss of custody of their three children."

Writer Wrong About Home School

Read All About ItA resident of Springfield, Missouri, takes issue with Thomas Sowell's August 24 column in which Sowell stated, "It is common for ordinary parents, with no training in education, to home school their children and consistently produce better academic results than those of children educated by teachers with master's degrees." The letter writer claims that the parents in Sowell's cited study were actually certified teachers from families with higher than average incomes. He also asserts that once home schooling mothers have more than three children, they generally enroll them in school because they "lack classroom management training."

Pop Warner Football Denies Home Schooler

tim06
An official for the Pop Warner youth football league challenged the legality of home schooling and refused to allow a home school student to participate. The parents, members of THSC, called on the Association for help. Tim Lambert wrote to the official, citing the Texas Supreme Court's 1994 ruling to uphold the 1987 Leeper decision and enclosing the most recent letter from the Texas commissioner of education as proof that it is legal to homeschool in Texas. He warned the official of possible legal action if the decision is not reversed.

Articles in THSC's weekly E-Newsletter are included because of their potential interest to the home school community of Texas.  Inclusion does not signify an endorsement. The Big Show

God calls us to prepare our kids for the "big show" of life,

but we cannot always be in the show with them.

Dads, have you ever coached and prepared your child for the "big show," only to discover that when the show starts, you have no control over what your child does? Your child is on his own to make decisions that will affect the outcome of the show.

"Smile, Scout!" I yelled. "You gotta smile if you're gonna make it! Move! Don't stand still!" I screamed to my motionless ten-year-old daughter as she auditioned at a local children's theater. I was not exactly screaming like an insane NFL coach, since all that hollering was taking place in my mind.

Slumped in a theater seat, I watched 128 talented and experienced actors audition for twenty roles. We were new to this venue and did not know the theater, the director, or the audition routine. Other than that, we were right at home. We are changing our world for Christ, and sometimes that looks like talking loudly on stage, wearing silly costumes, and building sets with other dads.
