On-the-Job Training for Mom
Sometimes parents find themselves learning valuable
lessons even as they teach their children academics.
In the article that begins below,
home school mother Sue Ellen Haning shares what
her students taught her.
Back to School for Mom
Ah, “back to school” rings excitement in some ears
and trepidation in others. What is it for you? My first
year of home schooling sent me “back to school” in
spite of the fact that I had a degree in education
with a teaching certificate saying I was qualified to
teach kindergarten through eighth grade. It was
through the mind of my five-year-old son Jake that I
learned how teaching and learning are connected.
The moment I attempted applying the university-
taught methods of teaching reading and math to
Jake, my real teacher training began.

Commentary on Home Schooling

Real life lessons and realities are not necessarily
found in the classrooms of public institutions. In her
commentary that appeared in an August 27th article
in the American Chronicle, Mary Lanphier
explains
why alternative modes of education might prove the
better option.
“Homeschooling vs. Public Schooling
“When we consign our children to public schools, we
feel satisfied that they are receiving 'quality
education'. But, are we really getting our money's
worth? More importantly, are the children gaining
anything from this kind of a learning procedure?”

Show Appreciation for Your Support Group Leaders!

How can you show your leaders that you appreciate
their hard work and sacrifice? We have some
suggestions:
• Send your leaders for a relaxing,
inspirational weekend at the beautiful
T Bar M Resort and
Conference Center,
outside of New Braunfels, on
October 27-29, 2006, for the annual THSC
Leadership Retreat. Provide for your leader a
time of
community, fellowship, and rejuvenation! THSC will
encourage each leader’s spirit, as well as renew the
vision for groups, by providing quality leadership
training. See why!
• Order certificates of appreciation. While
Home School Leader Appreciation Week occurs in the
spring, THSC will answer your requests for
certificates at any time during the year.
• Nominate your leader(s) for THSC
Leader of
the Year. See the details and a story from past
winners. Watch for information in the spring.
The
winner(s) will be announced and awards presented at
the 2007 THSC Awards Banquet, to be held in the
D/FW area in April. See 2006 Banquet details.
Leading a support group, when added to other
responsibilities, can be a difficult and selfless job. Let
your leaders know that they are appreciated!

Teacher Textbook Editions Forbidden on eBay

When home school parents have opinions, they tend
to share them. In this August 27th
WorldNetDaily exclusive, read how a major
online resource site drew ire from this community of
educators after the company adopted a new policy.
“eBay prohibits textbooks for homeschool
teachers
“Lumps them with illegal drugs, bootleg recordings,
prompting avalanche of complaints from customers
“A new policy by Internet trading behemoth eBay
that bans homeschool teachers' texts from its
auctions is prompting a tirade of complaints from the
company's faithful customer....”
"As you may know, eBay does not permit items that
are illegal, dangerous, offensive, or potentially
infringing. Additionally, eBay has just recently made
the decision to prohibit the sale of Teacher's Editions
of textbooks and solutions manuals that are intended
solely for use by teachers. Since eBay strives to be a
level-playing field, all Teacher's Edition textbooks,
manuals and guides will be covered under this policy.
Unfortunately, home schooling Teacher's Editions are
not exempt from this policy and this policy will apply
to all grade levels."
