Hurricane Ike Scholarship Fund
As many of you are well aware, devastating Hurricane Ike hit Galveston and destroyed many homes and businesses not only in that area but also in much of Southeast Texas. Most of the 57,000 residents of Galveston fled for their lives, and millions of people in Southeast Texas lost power and suffered flood damage. Hundreds of thousands in the Houston area continue to live without electricity. The Category 2 storm with winds in excess of 100 mph caused over sixty deaths, including twenty-six in Texas, and billions of dollars in damage. While many of the families are now beginning to return to Galveston, it will be a very long time before many of those families are able to fully recover.
The families without power are finding it a difficult task to maintain a somewhat normal life, and home school families are no different. Some of these areas are projected to be without power until October. Many families have lost everything, and others have lost time from work and their lives; home school families have lost curricula and, in some cases, books and educational materials collected over many years.
While the media begin to pay less attention to these hurting families, Texas home schoolers have asked how we can help them. First, we would encourage you to pray for these families. In addition, THSC has established a scholarship fund for those who would like to contribute to help these families replace home school curricula and educational materials. Contributions to THSC designated for this fund will be disbursed to families in need as a result of Hurricane Ike. If you wish, you may donate online. When you get to the special instruction field, type "Ike" in that field. We will set that money aside for these families. Thank you for praying with us for these families and helping to meet their need for home school curricula.
