Redefining Dog Days of Summer, Home School-Style

Success of THSC State Convention and Family Conference capped by Hank the Cowdog

The Woodlands, Texas, August 14, 2005.  A celebrity appearance by Hank the Cowdog (in reality John Erickson, Hank’s creator) closed the fifth annual THSC State Convention and Family Conference on a sweet note of success. Fun and education took center stage at the annual gathering hosted by the Texas Home School Coalition over the weekend. Thousands of home schoolers made their way from across Texas and the U.S. to The Woodlands to partake in a varied menu of vacation events, field trips, workshops, and back-to-homeschool shopping.

Finding the workshops “relevant to the home school family,” attendee Greg Fleming of Round Rock stated that he was impressed with the “mixture of vacation (Astroworld), field trips (San Jacinto), and child and teen programs with the convention.”

Family-friendly features ranging from a toddler area to teen leadership workshops enhanced the packed speaking schedule that included such notable guests as David Quine, developer of Cornerstone Curriculum from Texas, Dr. Fred Worth, professor of mathematics from Arkansas, and Zan Tyler, author from South Carolina and Broadman & Holman representative. The combination drew a large crowd, surpassing all previous attendance records. Although higher-than-expected numbers filled every workshop, guests were impressed by the small and intimate atmosphere at each session and throughout the event, including the exhibit hall made up of over 100 curriculum and resource providers.

“I cannot applaud THSC enough for this event,” said Belinda Harrell of Arlington, “I am so thankful we have such a professional, organized, informative, and helpful organization that is primarily responsible for our great freedoms in the state of Texas in the area of homeschooling.”

Next year’s event is already in the planning stages.  The 6th annual THSC State Convention and Family Conference will be held in The Woodlands Waterway Marriott the weekend of August 17-19, 2006.
