Early Voting Begins Next Week!
October 23-November 3, 2006, Texans can
participate in early voting. (Click on the graphic to
see schedule of 2006 election dates and deadlines.)
Last day to apply for a ballot by mail: October 31
(received by that day, not just postmarked)
Some may wonder why they should vote early. Well,
you never know what hindrances might present
themselves on Election Day. As home schoolers and
parents in general, most of us understand that
principle!
You still have Good Citizenship opportunities with your
students between now and Election Day. Texas
families need to educate their friends and neighbors
about the importance of selecting the candidates
who will best represent the interests of families.
Home schoolers will find teaching moments in many
places! Read Tim Lambert’s article, Dual Citizenship: a Christian's
Responsibility, an encouragement for
involvement in the political arena.

A Double Standard

The media has given much attention recently to the
inappropriate behavior of Republican Congressman
Mark Foley of Florida who wrote lewd email messages
to a male page. That, and other inappropriate
actions directed towards young male pages,
warranted his swift exit from Congress. Moreover,
those responsible for protecting Foley (whether
covering up for him or looking the other way when his
conduct was brought to their attention) should not
be in positions of leadership in the House going
forward, whether they are staffers or members of
Congress. And, in my judgment, that includes
Speaker Dennis Hastert, whose negligence with
respect to the Foley matter shows that he no longer
deserves to continue as House Republican leader.

Democrats Counting on Zeal

Democrats hope enthusiasm trumps Republican
efficiency in the battle for control of Congress.
Otherwise, they concede, they will have problems on
Nov. 7 as a party still struggling to catch up with
Republicans' ability to get voters to go to the polls.

Despite what he called the toughest challenge
Republicans face since they took control of Congress
in 1994, Ken Mehlman, chairman of the Republican

retain control of both the House and the Senate in
the November elections.

Gubernatorial Candidates Go Negative to Rally Bases

Republican Gov. Rick Perry finished off Tony Sanchez
in the 2002 governor's race with a hard-hitting
television commercial that linked the Democrat's bank
to money laundering by murdering drug runners.
That commercial caused independents to give up on
Sanchez and helped suppress the Democratic
turnout. Negative television advertising is in full
swing again in this year's governor's race. But
experts say the ads are more about the candidates
firing up their own voter base than they are about
taking out the opponents.

No Thanks, We’re Stupid

John Stuart Mill once famously called the British
Tories "The Stupid Party." From time to time since
then, the Tory's American cousin, the Republican
Party, has also earned that moniker. Now may be one
of those moments. If current polls and anecdotes are
to be believed, there may be a million or two
conservative Republicans who are planning to not
vote this November.

The Tin Ears of Kinky and Chris

One of the best pieces of advice given to people who
inherit money or win the lottery is to not make any
important decisions immediately. So what does
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell do upon
receiving a check for $1 million? He leaves a
telephone message on Kinky Friedman's cell phone
asking the Kinkster to meet with him for the purpose
of discussing why Friedman should drop out of the
race to help Bell defeat Gov. Rick Perry. How stupid
is this?

Why the Next Conservatism Needs a New Movement

I can honestly claim to have been one of the
godfathers of the existing conservative movement. In
some ways, that movement has achieved far more
than we ever dreamed it could when we started it in
the late 1960s and 1970s. Then, most people
thought of conservatism as a marginal force that had
been killed and buried with Barry Goldwater's defeat
in 1964. The idea that conservatism could in just a
few decades come to represent the American
mainstream while liberalism was marginalized would
have been unimaginable. Yet that has been the very
real achievement of today's conservative movement.
