The early rush of the new Democratic majority
in Congress has been slowed to a walk, but
the Republicans still have not adjusted to
being in the minority. At this week's
conference of House Republicans, the leaders
were surprisingly passive in dealing with
Democrats' efforts to control Iraq War
operations through the supplemental
appropriations bill. Oddly, the most
impassioned oratory came from Rep. Jerry
Lewis (R-Calif.), ranking Republican on the
House Appropriations Committee.

Release Texas State Senator Glenn
Hegar (R, Katy) sent a letter to the acting
Executive Commissioner of Health and Human
Services, Albert Hawkins, asking him to
clarify his intentions regarding Governor
Perry's executive order mandating that 11 and
12 year old girls be given multiple doses of
the Gardasil HPV vaccine before they can
attend Texas public schools.

Ahead? Texas House members Tuesday
edged the GOP-majority Legislature toward a
spring confrontation with Republican Gov.
Rick Perry by tentatively voting to unplug
his order requiring preteen girls to get a
vaccine that can prevent some cases of
cervical cancer.

Allegations Under pressure from
the Legislature, Gov. Rick Perry announced
Wednesday that the Texas Youth Commission
board will resign amid new criminal
allegations involving TYC staff and
revelations that the juvenile corrections
health care system is in shambles.
Under the Dome Sen. Rodney
Ellis said Tuesday that he has enough votes
to kill measures that would require photo
identification and proof of citizenship to
register to vote or cast a ballot.
