9/11 Plotters May Walk

Liberalism’s theories often sound good to the uninformed. But when liberals are in power and attempt to govern with those theories, the public usually wakes up. Here’s a good example. During the campaign, Barack Obama sounded like he had the moral high ground on Guantanamo Bay, claiming that the terrorist prison there violated our values. He vowed to close Gitmo and to try the terrorist thugs in civilian courts. Today the administration made good on half of that promise – Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other 9/11 conspirators are headed to New York City to be treated like American citizens and tried in civilian courts.

I guarantee you two things: First, these thugs will get the best legal counsel that the ACLU can provide. In fact, I bet high profile criminal attorneys will line up for the “honor” of defending these thugs against the United States. Second, the trial will be a persecution of conservatives. It will be the Left’s chance to put Bush and Cheney on trial; to put the CIA’s officers under oath and its practices under scrutiny; to convict and condemn the national security policies that kept America safe after 9/11.

In spite of the terrorists’ defiant confessions, there is a very real chance that Mohammed and the other 9/11 terrorists may walk on technicalities. Not the least of which may be the fact that they were subject to waterboarding, which President Obama has publicly called “torture.” The decision is another sad example of this administration’s pre-9/11 mindset.

Here’s some bi-partisan reaction to the news:

  • Senator John Cornyn (R-TX): “These terrorists planned and executed the mass murder of thousands of innocent Americans. Treating them like common criminals is unconscionable.”

  • Rep. Peter King (R-NY): “This, I think, will go down as one of the worst decisions any president has ever made.”

  • Tim Brown, a former New York City firefighter: “The only thing they are going to do is give them a stage to mock us ... and this makes me sick to my stomach.”

  • Senator Joseph Lieberman (ID-CT): “The terrorists who planned, participated in, and aided the September 11, 2001 attacks are war criminals, not common criminals. Not only are these individuals not common criminals but war criminals, they are also not American citizens entitled to all the constitutional rights American citizens have in our federal courts. The individuals accused of committing these heinous, cowardly acts … should therefore be tried by military commission rather than in civilian courts in the United States.”

This Won’t Help

The president’s efforts to appease the tyrants in Tehran may have to be stepped-up. Yesterday federal prosecutors, conducting a counterterrorism investigation, moved to seize more than half a billion dollars in assets controlled by an Iranian foundation in this country. I’m sure this is causing considerable consternation in Tehran and at the White House and State Department today too. The Associated Press reports that among the assets seized are “Islamic centers consisting of schools and mosques in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston.”

According to government documents, the foundation has been run by Iranian officials and funneled money to Iran’s state-owned bank. The foundation was also involved in other activities, such as providing “educational literature” to Muslims in U.S. prisons and providing support to “dozens of mosques around the country and supported Iranian academics at prominent universities.”

More Evidence Of Jihad

With each passing day, details surrounding Fort Hood murderer Major Nidal Malik Hasan’s background all depict a man who was intent on carrying out an “Islamic Jihad” against the American military. More evidence of Hasan’s extremism was released yesterday.

Hasan ordered personal business cards off of the Internet that identified himself as “SoA.” This acronym, commonly used by jihadists, stands for “Soldier of Allah.” The cards were green and white, the colors of Islam. Along with “SoA” in his official title was another acronym, “SWT.” This likely stood for “Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala” or “Glory to Allah.”

That’s not all. Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, says that Hasan may have wired personal money to Pakistan. Hasan had an annual salary of $90,000, yet he lived in a very modest apartment. While details about possible wire transfers have not been released, it wouldn’t be surprising if they were used to support radical Islamists in some form.

Immediately following the news that Hasan had contacted radical Imam Anwar al-Awlaki, the media reported that Hasan was emailing al-Awlaki to conduct research as a psychiatrist. This was the bizarre conclusion reportedly reached by the Joint Terrorism Task Force prior to the massacre. Probably out of fear of reprimand by liberal elites, task force agents did not pursue the emails further. This week, however, an investigator familiar with the emails said that Hasan was attempting to seek advice from the imam about a “moral dilemma.” Perhaps Hasan was torn between his loyalty as an American soldier and a “Soldier of Allah.” Was Hasan consulting al-Awlaki about the coming attack on Fort Hood?

No matter what the Obama Administration or Big Media try to tell us, the facts do not lie regarding Major Nidal Malik Hassan. The man was a devout Islamic extremist who carried out a personal jihad on innocent American men and women at Fort Hood.

The Final Fort Hood Casualty

Much has been written about the role political correctness played in abetting the Fort Hood massacre. But most of the commentary falls short in identifying just how instrumental political correctness has been in paving the way for numerous terrorist acts against America. Political correctness has been radical Islam’s greatest asset in its war against America. And as I argue in my Human Events column today, it’s time we execute it.  You can read my column at: www.humanevents.com.
