Taxing Jobs; Washington's Thanksgiving
Dear Friend,
In 1789 a Thanksgiving Day proclamation was issued by
President George Washington. As we pause 218 years later for this
Thanksgiving in 2007, his words make for a valuable reminder of from whence we
came.
County Government
County government in Texas is
where the rubber meets the road, and we ignore our county-level elected
officials to our fiscal peril.
Taxing Jobs

No title makes conservatives’ skin
crawl like “tax assessor/collector.” It’s just not a job most of us hope our
little conservative bundles of joy grow up to be. But thank goodness someone
does, because it’s a critically important position.
The Houston region has two of the best tax assessor/collectors in the state.
In Harris County you’ll find
Paul Bettencourt, a stalwart conservative who has led the charge
statewide on reforming the out-of-date, unfair property tax appraisal process.
He is a one-man think-tank, and an eager public servant in the finest sense of
the word.
Another great taxpayer advocate is Galveston County’s
Cheryl Johnson. You won’t find a more diligent steward of the
taxpayers’ money.
And for her diligence, the establishment is trying to run her out of her job.
Her heinous crime? Trying to promote fiscal responsibility. You might recall
that she took a strong stand during the legislative session against
taxpayer-funded lobbying; that alone painted a target on her political forehead.
Cheryl Johnson deserves the support of conservatives not only in her county but
from across the state.
County government is where the rubber meets the road, and we ignore those
county-level elected officials to our fiscal peril.

Speaking in Farmers’ Branch last
week I saw a familiar face in the audience – one of my upper-classman from Texas
A&M. It turns out that Steven Autry is now seeking to serve as judge of
the Dallas County Criminal Court #4. He was a strong, positive influence on me
as a cadet 20 years ago, and I have no doubt he’ll serve the people of Dallas
with distinction. Good luck, Mr. Autry, sir!

...[Pray that God would] enable us all, whether in
public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly
and punctually – to render our national government a blessing to all the People,
by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws,
discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed...
On behalf of the team here at
TFR and EmpowerTexans, I’d like to extend our thanks to many generous folks
from around the state who
contribute to our work. We hope you have a safe, relaxing time with your
friends and family.
