Tort Reform Is Key To Health Reform
November 2, 2009
By: Tiger Joyce with The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel
“In an August column appearing in the San Francisco Examiner, Texas Governor Rick Perry wrote: ‘Just six years ago, Texas was mired in a health care crisis. Our doctors were leaving the state, or abandoning the profession entirely, because of frivolous lawsuits and the steadily increasing medical malpractice insurance premiums that resulted.’
But Texas has since joined 24 other states by enacting reforms that include a reasonable limit on non-economic damages for pain and suffering of up to $750,000 per incident. This essential reform does not limit compensatory awards for calculable lost wages and medical expenses, but it does balance the interests of patients and care providers while helping to ensure access to necessary care.
Now, according to Governor Perry, doctors' insurance rates have declined by an average of 27 percent while the ‘number of doctors applying to practice medicine in Texas has skyrocketed by 57 percent. In . . . just the first five years after reforms passed, 14,498 doctors either returned to practice in Texas or began practicing here for the first time.’"

November Election Victories!
Passage of Proposition 11:
“By approving Proposition 11, the voters of Texas have sent a clear message: don’t mess with private property rights. This measure provides needed protections for private property owners and builds a firewall between the misguided principles of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Kelo ruling.” –Governor Rick Perry
Passage of Proposition 4:
"Texas is home to the finest institutions of higher learning in the nation and Proposition 4 will provide the funding necessary to allow additional Texas universities to achieve Tier One status. This measure is an essential step to ensuring our state is equipped to meet future challenges and will guarantee Texas continues to attract the people and employers necessary to sustain our quality of life and strong economy." –Governor Rick Perry
Election of Republican Governors in Virginia and New Jersey:
"I want to congratulate Governor-elect Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Governor-elect Chris Christie of New Jersey on their impressive victories. The voters of Virginia and New Jersey voted to change course by restoring control of their statehouses to the Republican Party. Conservatives across the nation should be emboldened by the decisive results in Virginia and New Jersey, and know that we must continue this momentum in 2010. These victories are a clear signal that policies coming out of Washington are not working and voters trust Republican governors to provide necessary change."
–Governor Rick Perry
The Golden State isn't worth it
November 1, 2009
By: William Voegeli with the Los Angeles Times
“Our high-benefit/high-tax model no longer works, especially compared with low-tax states like Texas.
In America's federal system, some states, such as California, offer residents a "package deal" that bundles numerous and ambitious public benefits with the high taxes needed to pay for them. Other states, such as Texas, offer packages combining modest benefits and low taxes. These alternatives, of course, define the basic argument between liberals and conservatives over what it means to get the size and scope of government right.”
