In Texas the law allows for cities to pass daytime curfews for minors, but many people are unaware of the repercussions that these curfews can have for home schooling families.
Corpus Christi has had such a curfew on the books since 2008. Although cities often try to include exemptions for home school students, many people don’t consider the issues that can arise when local business owners or law enforcement, who may not know a student is home schooled, try to enforce the ordinance.
THSC works hard to both inform local officials about the dangers of such ordinances and to make business owners and law enforcement aware of these exemptions in proper cases.
In Corpus Christi some home schoolers were concerned when they saw notices in the Garcia Library about the curfew, but no explanation of the exemptions for home school students. So THSC wrote a letter to the Garcia Library to clarify the exemptions for home schoolers and to encourage them to inform their employees to ensure that home school students are not unintentionally or unfairly targeted by the ordinance.
