State Rep. Giovanni Capriglione is authoring and pushing House Bill 1294, which would require that legislators in the state of Texas have to disclose certain government contracts that are signed while they are in office. This would prevent representatives in their district from voting certain ways on issues purely for personal gain. This includes government contracts that financially benefit them or their family directly.
The Texas Home School Coalition commends Representative Capriglione for filing this and similar legislation to promote transparency within the legislature. Transparency allows constituents access to information that might impact why legislators are voting a certain way on issues relevant to them. This access to information also provides accountability and deters legislators from voting purely for self-benefit.
In the current system, legislators are potentially able to pass legislation and sign government contracts that give opportunities for personal financial gain. Passing this legislation would require members of the legislature to be more open and honest with their constituents regarding contracts they receive with the state. As a result, home school families and Texas families would then have the information they need to be able to hold their legislators accountable and to maintain transparency within our state government.
