February 26, THSC PAC released the statement below to clarify some of the reasons THSC endorsed Bryan Slaton in lieu of Representative Dan Flynn. THSC thoroughly vetted Bryan Slaton, including an interview by a THSC vetting committee. Mr. Slaton scored high in his beliefs and positions on parental rights, school choice, and social issues affecting families.
THSC PAC Statement:
“Recently some prominent supporters of Rep. Dan Flynn, including an elected official in the district, have made false and malicious attacks against THSC over our support of Bryan Slaton. These false claims deliberately misrepresent THSC’s position. To state the truth clearly: THSC has supported Dan Flynn in the past. In the last legislative session, however, he refused to work with us on vital pieces on parental rights and school choice legislation. Flynn has also been a key supporter of the House leadership, which has contributed to the constant problem of prominent house republicans killing conservative legislation. Because of this, THSC can no longer support Dan Flynn. Instead, we are supporting Bryan Slaton, a leader who is truly committed to defending the rights of parents and home schoolers.”

Representative Flynn Response:
Again, we believe it is imperative to set the record straight. The truth is we had a full time lobby team who were in Representative Flynn’s office many times during the last two sessions specifically discussing the top three bills pertaining to parental rights and home schooling. Representative Flynn’s office chose not to help THSC with support of these bills which would have 1. protected single parents and their children, 2. leveled the playing field for home school students in college admissions, and 3. opened up choices to home school families to compete in University Interscholastic League extracurricular activities.
We could never secure any assistance from Representative Flynn’s office with important bills, whether our own or others we were working for or against. We left messages and requested meetings with Representative Flynn, to no avail. We got no response, which is how legislators express their opposition to your bills without having to tell you so. Representative Flynn’s assertion that our comments were “an outright lie” is simply untrue. There are many ways to oppose a bill apart from literally voting against it and Representative Flynn’s office made his position on these issues to us very clear.
As to funding, interestingly according to Texas Ethics Commission reports, Representative Flynn’s own campaign has been funded by the Speaker Straus Team to the tune of at least $25,000 and the vast majority of the almost half a million dollars in campaign contributions have come from outside his district. One instance: a $5000 donation from Charles Butt, the biggest financial supporter of Wendy Davis during her time in the Senate. It appears to many that instead of representing home schoolers in his own district, Representative Flynn now represents the Austin establishment. THSC has been very vocal about the severe harm done to parental rights because of the work of House Leadership to block conservative parental rights reforms.
In regard to donations to THSC by Empower Texans, a total of $2500 for a table sponsorship was donated to THSC Inc (our non-political arm). This has no bearing on our political work.
While Representative Flynn may continue to claim support for the home school community, when we sought his help on the important issues described above, he didn’t respond. Talk is cheap.
