In our 30-year history of advocating for parental rights and home schooling, THSC has never been more active than we are today. We gained good ground in the March elections, but we can’t let up, because several critical public offices are at stake in the runoff election on May 24.
Besides voting, what more can you do?
A generous donor has offered to match up to $137,500 for any contributions to the THSC PAC by April 16. THSC needs your help to raise these funds, maximize the match opportunity, and win key elections around the state. That means, if you give to the THSC PAC by April 15, your money will double its impact in support of Keeping Texas Families Free. Will you make a generous contribution right now to help us win these important races?
In order to preserve our right to home school, we must elect godly leaders who will actively and aggressively work to protect the rights of home schoolers and parents. This runoff election is our chance to do just that.
Three Active Roles: What Your Money Does
Texas home school families are hard-working families stretching dollars. THSC wouldn’t ask for money from Texas families without understanding the need to stretch dollars to their greatest use. For this reason, you can rest assured money to the THSC PAC will stretch far in defense of your family’s freedom while we work to elect leaders who will support our efforts to protect parental rights. These are just a few of the ways that THSC works for you and your family.
One: Defending Home Schoolers at the Capitol
THSC vets, interviews, endorses, and advocates for conservative, home school champions to defend Texas parents at every level of government. In doing so, Texas families have a reliable and like-minded resource for making decisions at the voting booth. If home schoolers around the state register to vote and turnout on May 24, then we may very well decide the entire election.
In addition to influencing elections, THSC also hosts a full-time lobbying team of home school graduates, known as the THSC Watchmen. Every legislative session, Watchmen sort through approximately 10,000 bills and analyze them for threats to home schooling and parental rights.
Not only did we pass legislation in 2015 that prevents discrimination against home school graduates seeking college admission, THSC was also instrumental in the drafting and passing of legislation to allow foster parents to home school foster children. The THSC Watchmen identified and intervened on numerous bad bills that would have jeopardized parental rights and home schooling. Your financial gift protects Texas families from dangerous and restrictive legislation.
Two: Advocating for Texas Families
THSC regularly interfaces with state agencies on issues relevant to home schooling and parental rights. Earlier this year, our meeting with the incoming Texas Education Agency Commissioner yielded positive results with the re-adoption of policies that protect home schoolers. For many years, the Texas Education Agency has recognized THSC as the authority on home schooling matters in Texas.
THSC regularly advocates for individual member families by influencing state and federal agencies on behalf of home schoolers. We intervene in situations where families face some level of discrimination due to their status as home schoolers. Over the years we have informed the Social Security Administration, state universities, judges, attorneys, CPS, potential employers, and many other entities of the laws concerning home schooling and parental rights.
This support to Texas families changes lives. In some cases, it’s preventing the discrimination against a student entering a local community college, and in other cases the advocacy provides social security funding to struggling home school families. In 2015, we sent 89 such letters, and in the first quarter of 2016, we have already sent more than 40 letters. Your dollars change lives and support the freedom of Texas families.
Three: Defending Against CPS
As our membership has grown, so has our legal network. One of the primary benefits of being a member of the Texas Home School Coalition Association is access to our 24-hour CPS hotline, where THSC members can call to get help, advice, and legal representation any time that CPS comes to the door.
In 2015, THSC assisted several families who were unjustly targeted by CPS, resolving the issues without further incident. THSC also continues to defend the Tutt family, whose children were illegally removed by CPS in 2013. Although six of the children have been returned home, one remains in foster care, with the case pending before the Texas Supreme Court.
With such devastating stories for Texas families, THSC proactively set up a meeting with key leaders. Along with Texas State Representative and home schooling dad James Frank, THSC recently met with Department of Family and Protective Services Commissioner John Specia and HHS Commissioner Chris Traylor to discuss CPS policies related to home school families. Our concerns were well received and we anticipate positive results from this meeting. Your gift keeps together healthy families under attack.
Will you stretch your dollar?
For 30 years THSC has fought on the front line to ensure your right to raise your children as you see fit, without the government’s interference. In order to Keep Texas Families Free, we urgently need your help to raise $137,500 for this matching grant due on April 15.
Please, will you make a generous contribution to the THSC PAC today?
