We believe the best defense is a good offense and that Texans should have freedom in their children’s education decisions.

For 30-plus years, THSC's position has been to protect and empower parents to make decisions for their children, especially their education. In the 1980s we fought against those who argued that parents were not qualified to teach their children at home so should not be allowed to home school. Our foundational argument against this was that parents have a fundamental, constitutional right to direct the care, control and upbringing of their children and should therefore have the right to home school.
The problem of unlawful removal of children has become so prevalent in Texas, a Houston judge recently took decisive action against CPS. In our most high profile case, the Tutt family nightmare with CPS that began in 2013 when Judge Garcia, a Dallas judge, issued a removal order without a hearing and no evidence of danger to the children continues.
Last December, Governor Abbott appointed Mike Morath to be the new head of the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Morath is known for his service on the Dallas ISD board and his efforts to reform that district. D Magazine wrote an article on Morath’s very interesting background.
It’s not uncommon to hear discussion of “culture wars”—the clash between traditional morality and liberal positions related to public policy issues like abortion, same-sex marriage, and even home schooling and parental rights.
These policy discussions are played out during campaigns when citizens choose legislative, executive, and judicial officials at the ballot box. THSC has been involved in this process since the 1980s, when some of these elected officials tried with some success to limit the right of parents to teach their children at home. During that time, it became crystal clear that to secure our rights as parents to make decisions for our children’s education and upbringing without the interference of government, we would have to work to elect officials who agreed with that premise.
February 26, THSC PAC released the statement below to clarify some of the reasons THSC endorsed Bryan Slaton in lieu of Representative Dan Flynn. THSC thoroughly vetted Bryan Slaton, including an interview by a THSC vetting committee. Mr. Slaton scored high in his beliefs and positions on parental rights, school choice, social issues affecting families.
In the race for the Texas Supreme Court, place 5, there is an ongoing debate about the challenge that Rick Green is making against Paul Green.
