Write the Word
When our children learn to speak, it is by imitating the syllables we repeat. When they learn to use a fork, to properly clean a bathroom, and to be courteous, it is because they imitate what they see. The same is true for proper penmanship and like all disciplines, penmanship is mastered by practice. What better words to practice writing than the Holy Word of God?
Long before you and I were quoting the Charlotte Mason method or the benefits of a classical education, painters learned by copying master works, aspiring writers copied masterpieces of literature, and those desiring to be maestros learned from great composers. The benefits of copy work is widely applauded by home, secular, and parochial educators. But what shall they copy? If our children are going to write, why not write the Word?
Laura Macfarlan will challenge parents to instill a passion for the Word of God in their children by encouraging them to write the Word. If it was important for the kings, it should be a priority for servants of His Kingdom. Come learn how to choose what they should write, ensuring passages are grade-appropriate and incorporate ideal letter combinations for handwriting mastery. Manually writing subject material is a way to enhance learning and retention, so let’s have them write the Word!

Slaying the Cram-Pass-Forget Dragon
The norm for middle school, high school, and college students today is the Cram–Pass–Forget Cycle: Students cram for tests, pass them, and soon forget most of what they crammed. Most students lack any framework or skills to do otherwise. Expectations are usually set low and students know they will not be accountable for the material again until the final exam. Educators practically assume students will not remember what they are taught. The Cram-Pass-Forget Cycle does a sad disservice to students because it leaves them with little knowledge and mediocre grades instead of actual learning. It has furthermore led to the loss of America’s global leadership in science and math. Replace this bankrupt cycle with a Learn-Master-Retain Cycle. It is possible! Realizing this kind of transformation requires significant changes in methods and strategies of studying, practicing, and testing. This workshop applies to many different subjects, but science is the primary application that will be discussed.

The Most Important Factor in a Child’s Future
Western Society is in bad shape. The moral decline of society proceeds at an alarming rate and there’s not much happening to stop it. Your children, especially your sons, can be the leaders of their generation. However, if they don’t lead their families and their society toward Christ, there are many forces that will lead toward moral corruptness. Parents have the opportunity to make the biggest impact on their children. Listen to Phillip as he reminds us of the importance of intentionally discipling our children and shares lessons that he has learned in his own life, as well as working with young men for the past eight years.

Preparing Students for College Writing
College writing requirements are increasingly becoming more rigorous, and students are expected to arrive with certain skills. This workshop will present an overview of these skills and make suggestions on how to develop readiness. Among these proficiencies are higher level writing tasks such as analysis, synthesis, argumentation, and evaluation. Most college writing requires students to form their own opinion and support it with evidence. This is argumentative writing, and it demands critical thinking across the curriculum. Whether making an assumption about a short story in a literature course, analyzing a scientific method in a biology class, or drawing conclusions about a marketing strategy, students must be able to think and write strategically, critically, and independently.
