With the legislative session in full swing, the THSC Watchmen are working hard, analyzing legislation and preparing to speak on different bills in public hearing committees. Each of the lobbyist interns have relocated to Austin to advocate for homeschoolers and parental rights for the entire five month session without pay.

Josiah NewmanIn another post, you met Emma who is eager to make a difference in Texas. This week, Josiah Newman offers his opinion on THSC and why the fight for parental rights is so important.

Why is the protection of parental rights important for homeschoolers?

Part of what makes the United States of America a great nation is our diversity. The government’s attempt to crush diversity of thought and lifestyle into a uniform mold threatens our daily liberty and freedom of choice.

Every legislative session, bills come up that threaten parental and homeschooling rights. When parents lose control over their children’s education, they lose status as directors of care for their children.

The homeschooling method needs to be actively protected in the legislature so parents can maintain the right to direct the care and upbringing of their children without excessive government oversight. This is the primary goal of THSC and the THSC Watchmen, and we need your help.

How can homeschoolers support the efforts of the THSC Watchmen?

Texans who care about parental and homeschooling rights can support the THSC Watchmen and our efforts by checking off these 4 tasks:

  1. Become informed! Sign up for updates on legislation and issues impacting Texas families as the session progresses.  In some cases, you can take action supporting or fighting against a bill.
  2. Talk to friends! Other homeschool families need to know when and how their rights are challenged and what they can do to help. One active voice is a seed of awareness that spreads and multiplies. Let that be yours!
  3. Visit the Capitol! THSC Capitol Days is a great way for you and your family to learn about the legislative process and meet representatives in government. Getting to know the legislators and their staff is powerfully moving!
  4. Donate to the cause! A small donation from many quickly grows into a full support.  Please consider donating even $20 if you can’t afford anything more. Each donation supports the THSC Watchmen as we fight for your rights in the capital.

It’s easy to accept the lie that one person can’t do much, but the truth is that ones add up to hundreds, and your voice will send out ripples that can affect change.

Check these 4 tasks off your list over the next few months and know that you were a part of Keeping Texas Families Free!
